RONI SIZE’s whole life has been about building something new from whatever was around him. From Bristol youthclub parties, through the white heat of rave and the founding moments of jungle and drum’n’bass, to transforming underground electronic music into something that could be played by a live band on the biggest arena and festival stages, he has at each stage created completely afresh - not just a sound or style but an entire methodology of how music can be made. And each time, that new creation has reflected his heritage, his surroundings and the precise moment in which he’s operating. 20-years ago, The Mercury Prize win for his ‘New Forms’ album brought D’n’B to the forefront of dance-music news, making even the rest of the industry – where reactions had up until that point been bemused – sit up and pay attention. For several years thereafter Roni and team were on top of the world, succeeding as solo artists as well as a collective, maintaining underground credibility yet receiving Brit awards and even collaborating with some of the biggest names in hip hop.

QUEEN MILLZ isn’t about to be silenced. A silver-tongued rapper from Leicester, she spent 2020 battling against preconceptions, releasing a string of fantastic singles that moved from style to style. But then came lockdown, and the world changed. Instead of being defeated, though, Queen Millz changed too – a social media star, her freestyles earned shout-outs from her peers, and took her all the way from IG Live to ITV News. Her track ‘Suffocating’ with heavy bass DJ pioneer AC Slater and Qlank became an absolute anthem, a multi-million stream hit named the official theme song for EDC Vegas last year; cheeky single ‘Mill$’ and emotional SB:TV freestyle ‘Hear Me Out’ illustrated her breadth – at times, it feels as though there’s nothing she can’t achieve. Opening 2022 with the aptly-titled ‘Winner’, Millz then switched it up with the body positive hymn ‘Body & Shape’ and the hella-cheeky R&B-tinged ‘Real One’. It’s clear that you judge Queen Millz at your peril – something the sheer breadth on ‘Causing A Scene’ makes clear. She’s leading from the front. In an era dominated by feature-culture, Queen Millz is prioritising her own voice, and speaking her truth in the process.
